From SAA: Are you considering implementing an archival collections management system (ACMS) such as ArchivesSpace or Collective Access? Are you overwhelmed by the process of selecting the right tool for your institution? This web seminar, which is based on the original web seminar developed by Lisa Spiro and her report about archival management software issued by the Council on Library and Information Resources, will take you through the process of evaluating and selecting a content management system.
Upon completion of this class you’ll be able to:
- Identify what an archival CMS is,
- Defend the implementation of an CMS,
- Use a sound process for selecting a CMS, and
- Discern the factors you should consider in selecting a CMS:
- Open source vs. commercial product
- Support for description (EAD), collection management, and archival statistics
- Web publishing support
- Hosted or local system?
- Cost of Sustainability
- Technical expertise required and support provided
- Customizability o Ability to integrate with digital asset management systems
- Select some alternatives to using a CMS.
You’ll see concrete examples drawn from both open source and commercial systems.
Who should attend? Anyone who will be participating or anticipates participating in the decision-making process as their institution selects an archival content management system.
This is one of the Tools and Services courses in the Digital Archives Specialist (DAS) Curriculum and Certificate Program. If you intend to pursue the Certificate, you'll need to pass the examination for this course. Please follow Option 1 to access exam information.
