Thirty-one participants from eighteen states, representing
17 men’s and 12 women’s religious communities attended an intensive archival
workshop. The workshop was held from
June 24-29, 2012 at the Oblate Renewal Center
in San Antonio, TX. This year, participants were given a 160
page workbook that included all the lectures and examples of policies and forms
that could be applied to their repositories and a copy of Laura Millar’s new
book, Archives: Principles and Practices.
In order to keep participants current on archives, Lyndsey
Rainey from the Cushing Library of Texas A&M provided an introduction to
Archon, an archives management system sponsored by the University
of Illinois at Champaign. Within a year this open source
software program will be merged with Archivists’ Toolkit to form a new open
source software program, Archives Space.
While in San
Antonio, participants visited the Southwestern OblateHistorical Archives and the Congregation of the Sisters of Divine Providence. The Wednesday afternoon
travel day took members to the Alamo followed by a Texas
barbeque at a restaurant located on San
Antonio’s Riverwalk.
The next introductory archives workshop, the 6th
will be held during the summer of 2014 God willing!
