Introductory Archive Workshop for Religious Communities

The information below is shared with us by CARA member Malachy McCarthy:

Introductory Archive Workshop for Religious Communities
Ronkonkoma, New York, June 2014

The Catholic Library Association (CLA) is pleased to announce the sixth Introductory Archive Workshop for Religious Communities to be held at the Cenacle Retreat House, Ronkonkoma, NY from June 15-20, 2014. The 5-day intensive program is directed toward individuals who are interested in learning about archival theory and practice or who wish to update their archival training.

Unlike other archival workshops, the sessions will focus on the unique types of records found in the archives of men’s and women’s religious communities. These records document not only the communities themselves, but also the evolution of Catholicism in the United States, and its impact on educational, social and charitable institutions that shaped the nation’s history.

The program, directed by professional religious archivists, will include lectures, tours, and opportunities for sharing experiences.

Complete program and registration information and a registration form are posted on the Catholic Library Association website at http://www.cathla.org/archives-workshop, or contact the CLA at cla2@cathla.org or phone 312-739-1776 or toll free 855-739-1776.

REGISTRATION DEADLINE MAY 1, 2014.

Dear Fellow CARA Members:

It’s Fall, and that means it’s time for our CARA Fall Meeting.

Since last we met, members of the CARA Steering Committee have decided to step away from their responsibilities and make room for others to have a hand in organizing the activities of our group. We can be grateful for the fine and devoted service they have given over the years. Let’s all say Thanks! to:

Malachy McCarthy – President
Diane Pugh – Vice President
Sr. M. Joella Cunnane – Secretary
Joan Sweeney – Communications Coordinator

And, as you know, Richard Seidel who took care of the Treasury and Membership functions passed away in the Spring.

Right now Jerice Barrios and Patricia Carroll are answering the call to arrange our next education event and Business Meeting. At that meeting we would like to be able to install a full Steering Committee. Could you be part of that? Please consider adding your talents to help CARA remain vital and relevant to our members. Any one of the outgoing steer-ers would be happy to talk with you about the CARA jobs they have performed.

The topic for the education portion of the meeting will be Working With Volunteers and Interns. We are planning a panel presentation with several perspectives represented and with lots of opportunity for questions, answers and networking. As always there will be light refreshment and maybe even door prizes!

The time frame for the Meeting is late October to early November. We will keep you informed.

Please do consider becoming part of the Steering Committee.  If you would like more information, please contact Jerice Barrios [cenacle.archives@gmail.com], Patricia Carroll [parocarroll@sbcglobal.net], or Malachy McCarthy [mccarthym@claretians.org]

Looking forward to seeing you at the CARA Meeting,
Jerice Barrios
